The Australian Aborigine shows the way of life which must have existed in the stone age. They were simple hunters and food gatherers with no knoledgeof metals or agriculture and only a basic form of community life, no domesticated animals or permanent buildings or shelter.

Art of the Australian Aborigine is similar to the middle stone age (mesolithic) Europe of about 10,000 years ago. Subject material is take from animal life - Kangaroo, turtle, emu, etc. and treated in a stylized geometric fashion. Basic groupings of objects appears along with spirals, whirls and chevrons. Earth colourings -ochre, brown, red and charcola black were used.

In the south of the continent, geometric forms perdominate. In the north, animal forms are more common. Of particular interest are the X-ray drawings of animals, birds, fish in which the internal details are shown. (Haptic -c/f Egypt - showing what is known, not what is just seen.

The Mimi drawings of human figures in motion are similar to South African bushmen drawings.
